A mouthwatering cheese burek for a easy and simple weeknight dinner.
Servings: 2

  • 8 small puff pastry dough squares

  • ounces/100 grams feta
  • 8 ounces/250 grams mozzarella
  • 3 tablespoons cottage cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • teaspoon salt
  • Mozzarella balls (optional)

  • 1 egg for brushing
  • Handful sesame seeds or black cumin

  • Preheat the oven to 355 °F (180 °C).
  • Thaw the dough squares. If you're not using using butter puff pastry, brush the squares with melted butter/oil.
  • Mix the filling ingredients except for the mozzarella balls.
  • Line up a sheet pan with parchment paper and place the dough squares on top.
  • Place a spoonful of the filling and a mozzarella ball in the center of each square, brush with an egg around the edges and close as shown in the videos. Tighten the closings well and make indentations in the corners of the burek.
  • Brush the burek sandwiches with an egg, sprinkle with sesame seeds or black cumin and bake for about 45 minutes, or until golden.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to make it vegan?
Yep, you can fill it up with sautéed onions and mushrooms or spiced mashed potatoes. To replace the egg in the filling, use a mixture of 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds + 1½ tablespoons water. Mix well in a bowl and set aside for 5 minutes. To replace the egg in brushing, just use oil.
